IMAX Corporation today announced that Warner Bros. Pictures' Suicide Squad opened with a record-setting $18.2 million on 636 IMAX screens globally, making it the largest IMAX debut in August on both an international and global scale, surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened with $15.9 million worldwide. Domestically, Suicide Squad grossed $11 million on 382 IMAX screens, with $7.2 million from 254 international IMAX sites (without the benefit of China). Suicide Squad broke Guardians of the Galaxy's box office record of the largest overall August debut with $135.1 million.

Domestically, Suicide Squad kicked off the weekend with $2.4 million from IMAX pre-shows on Thursday, setting a new record for August and surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy as the previous record holder (with $1.9 million). Overall, IMAX accounted for 15 of Suicide Squad's top 20 opening theaters. International IMAX weekend results for Suicide Squad were led by such notable markets as Sweden (with $96,000 per screen), Puerto Rico ($67,000 per screen), South Korea ($59,000 per screen), Dubai ($57,000), the Netherlands ($56,000 per screen) and Australia ($53,000 per screen). Major overseas markets yet to open include Denmark, Turkey, Egypt, Argentina, Germany, Austria, Italy, and in early September, Japan.
